TISSINGTON TRIANGLE 2009 raises over £1,000
Lovely weather failed to bring out the cyclists and despite a valiant effort with publicity, including posters, press releases, flyers, e-mails, mail shots and a Radio Derby slot, only 57 people took part in this year’s event. This compares to 73 last year.
It might be the credit crunch effect or the date or the difficulty of contacting cycling enthusiasts. Whatever it is, we will have a thorough de-brief, learn from our experience and report to the membership on what we recommend next year.
However, those that took part really enjoyed it and said they would come back next year. Many travelled far to the event, from Telford, Wolverhampton and Birmingham, just to mention a few.
Everything went well, we had no injuries or participants getting lost and marshals and checkpoints did a sterling job.
Club President Andrew and Jonathan Short and their team helped boost the numbers and had respectable finishing times, although these were flattered a bit by the clock used for timing gradually running slow (next time put a fresh battery in).
We would like to thank all the entrants and their efforts to raise sponsorship monies. Over £1,000 was raised in total, including entrance fees. This was intended to be presented to Highfields School, in Matlock, as a contribution towards their mini-bus appeal. However, due to a change in circumstances, the school has declined the sponsorship and accordingly the Rotary Club of Matlock has re-assigned the funds raised to the Fairplay Minibus Campaign, which aims to raise enough funds in North Derbyshire to buy a special mini-bus for disabled children.
CHATSWORTH COUNTRY FAIR RAISES £2,950 FOR LOCAL CHILDREN
Matlock Rotarians and supporters spent three long days 29th – 31st August manning a stall at Chatsworth Country Fair, to raise money to improve the quality of life for two local children from Darley Dale, Kade Webster and Russell Gratton, who both have a serious illnesses.
They enticed some of the 100,000 visitors to take part in a dice throwing competition with a chance of winning £250 for throwing six sixes! Despite the odds, visitors very generous helped raise £2,950 for this good cause. Throwing six sixes isn’t impossible, the prize had been won before when a young lad won a flat screen TV!
President Andrew Hodkin commented “This event will help to improve the quality of life for Kade and Russell, Well done to everyone who took part, and thanks to all those who made it happen. The Rotary Club of Matlock raised £2,950 and would like to thank the generosity of the visitors to Chatsworth.”
Kade Webster aged seven, say’s her greatest wish is to be able to go and swim with the dolphins, so this year the money will help towards the cost of her fulfilling her dreams.
The Rotary Club of Matlock has provided Russell Gratton in the past with a trip to Disney Land Florida, and has paid for his bedroom to be redecorated.
The Duke and Duchess of Devonshire paid the stall a visit and are pictured below along side Matlock Rotarian John Bent.
SIXTH ANNUAL DOVEDALE DIPPER IS A GREAT SUCESS
The Dove Dale Dipper organized by the Rotary Club of Matlock is a circular 26 mile walk/run or a 15 mile ramble, starting at Hartington Village Hall set in the beautiful Derbyshire and Staffordshire countryside.
We were delighted with the number of participants who entered our sixth Dove Dale Dipper event held on Sunday 3rd August to raise funds for this years charity Ashgate Hospice. It is hoped that when all the sponsorship is received the event will raise around £10,000 for the hospice.
The weather was warm and sunny for the four hundred and four runners and walkers, who took part. Two hundred and seventy two entered the 26 mile challenge; one hundred and thirty two entered the Ramble, along with around fifteen dogs and some brave youngsters. The weather remained fine all day and only twelve of the starters dropped out on route.
It’s becoming a truly international event, with a special visitor this year from Italy who had completed 445 marathons along with his colleague who is a member of the 100 marathon club!
The winner of the challenge was Ian Hughes who finished in a time of 3 hours 48 minutes. Lesley Yorke was the fastest lady at 4 hours 40 minutes, followed by Annie Carrington who was the fastest ladies Veteran with the same time. The fastest male veteran was Les Footitt in 3 hours 54 minutes.
Everyone was offered refreshments and encouragement at the various check points along the way, staffed by Matlock Rotarians. Many of the participants complimented Matlock Rotary for a really well organised event.
Matlock Rotary President Andrew Hodkin commented “This event will raise a great deal of money for Ashgate Hospice. Well done to everyone who took part, and thanks to all those who made it happen”
Sunday the 2nd August 2009 has been selected as the date for this years’ Dovedale Dipper Walk/Run.
The results and more pictures and competitor feedback are available on the Dovedale dipper pages
