TISSINGTON TRIANGLE RIDES AGAIN
27th June saw the completion of the 3rd Tissington Triangle Cycle Challenge. The weather was superb, no snow or ice this year, however the turnout continues to fall. perhaps because we clashed with England in the World cup. 44 riders turned up and we hope to raise at least £1,000 towards our chosen charity SSAFA Forces Help. A lsit of riders and their times is available on the Tissington Triangle results page, together wih some more photos.
The organisors would like to thank all of the particpaants who helped make is a successful day

ROTARY RAISE OVER £3,000 FOR AQUABOX
A standing ovation from the 500 strong audience was a fitting tribute to the band, choirs and Rotary organisers of a Charity Concert held at Highfields School which raised £3,091.78 for Aquabox.
The concert featured Sir Richard Arkwright’s Masson Mills Band, The Dalesmen Male Voice Choir and three local School Choirs formed especially for the occasion from Darley Churchtown Primary School, Longstone Primary School and Wirksworth Junior School.
Throughout the evening the packed Highfields Hall was treated to an inspiring and varied band programme with excellent solo instrumentals, a first class male voice choir, and an outstanding individual singing performance. But the three school choirs were not to be outshone. They had been excellently tutored by Louise Hopkins and their school staffs and they took their opportunity to perform on stage with ‘the professionals’ in some style.
The grand finale featuring the band and joint school choirs was spectacular and the standing ovation raised the roof – the whole concert was a wonderful performance by all the participants, and a lasting experience for all the children.
This memorable event was sadly the last concert to be arranged and conducted by Musical Director Stephen Shimwell who tragically passed away only a few days later – it was a privilege and pleasure to work with him – and long may his musical legacy continue!
The Rotary Clubs of Matlock, Bakewell and Wirksworth, joint organisers of the event, would like to thank all those who took part, supported, sponsored and attended the concert and helped to ensure that Aquabox can continue the vital work of ‘Supplying Safe Water to Disaster Areas’.
THE VISIT TO SILVES PART 1
Just like a ‘ten people came to dinner who-done-it’ there were 24 of us scheduled to visit our twin club Silves on the Algarve; then just like the dinner guests, people fell off the getaway spiral like flies. The vagaries of the Icelandic ecological make-up combined with the inability of the air traffic gurus to show some common sense had the same effects as the deviant mastermind of the story and reduced our party to six intrepid twinners. The small number threw the larger plans of Silves into somewhat of disarray, in fact a lot of the Algarve residents made other plans as they did not think we could make the trip. However the mainstays of Silves again did us proud. We would like to extend a big thank your to host for their wonderful hospitality.
Led by our senior member, Tony BROOME, supported by Lionel HARKER, who tells us he is actually older than Tony, your correspondent Terry FOX and partners, we bought Matlock’s greetings at the 17th Charter Dinner of the Silves Rotary Club, which was held at the Hotel Garbe in Armacao de Pera, which we made our headquarters. This was the second dinner in succession that we were not allowed to pay for! In addition we enjoyed the finery of Lagos, the markets of Loule, the sardines of Portimao, and Tony’s first sighting of a red -rumped swallow, amongst the other many highlights of the visit.
A NIGHT AT THE RACES
Matlock Bath provided an unusual venue for horse racing on March 29th, when the club held a race night at the Temple Hotel. The going was heavy and the betting was frantic. It is amazing how many of the members and their partners were transformed from mild mannered individuals to panting punters at the prospect of winning loads of money, albeit funny money. The DVD, provided by Terry Fox was excellent. Each race was different and the quality of the horses and courses was great. At the start of the night each person was given £50,000 and bets were restricted to straight wins. After eight races, the call was made to see who had won the most money. It was Chris (Smiler) Collison, who won £1m!. An attempt to find the biggest looser failed as there were too many. The bookies Pete “Pricey” Wigglesworth and Neil “Nobbler” Proctor and the starter “Trusty” Tony Forsyth. made a small profit of £75 (real money) for the club.
MATLOCK ROTARY CELEBRATES 82ND CHARTER NIGHT
Matlock Rotary president Albert Ripamonti would like to thank all of his guests and speakers who all helped make the celebration of the Matlock Rotary 82nd Charter night a great success. We hope to see many of you again next year.
Over 740 pieces of art from twelve Infant & Junior Schools in the Matlock area were displayed at the Imperial Rooms, Matlock on Saturday 27th February. The three winning entries and seven runners up were displayed in colourful frames. There were an additional ninety entries that were identified by the judges as being of exceptional quality.
Attendance at the display exceeded expectations with many of the entrants, their families and friends attending to view the display. Although quiet at the 10.00am opening with only a few passer-by, by 11.00am it was busy with a steady flow of people until the close at 3.00pm.
At 2.00pm, prizes were awarded to the winners and runners up by Albert Ripamonti, President of the Rotary Club of Matlock and Geoff Stevens, Mayor of Matlock.Geoff Kersey who had been part of the judging team with Pollyanna Pickering also attended to lend his support and voice his appreciation of the children’s work.
Our main sponsors Turners Art of Rowsley had donated paper, paints and brushes to all the schools and on the day, contributed to the prizes by giving vouchers redeemable at their outlet in Rowsley. Geoff Kersey and Pollyanna Pickering generously donated signed books, art paper, calendars and other assorted gifts.
A community painting was undertaken to add to the activities and to raise funds for the “Thanks for Life” - End Polio Now Campaign. Many colourful splodges were added by little and large fingers to form the background of the painting. When finished, the tape on the canvas will be removed to reveal the letters of ‘Thanks for Life, the theme of the painting Competition. A suitable location is being considered for its permanent display and we would welcome suggestions.

Our international objective is to raise funds to immunize the children of the last 4 countries so that they have the same life chances as our own children.
A total of £350 was raised from the schools’, this will be added to the proceeds from the Sainsbury’s collection carried out by Matlock Rotary on the 19th & 20th February to raise the gross amount of £1228.00.The net proceeds will be sent to the Polio Eradication Fund.

CHATSWORTH COUNTRY FAIR2009 RAISES £2,731
Great fun was had by 19 Rotarians and six partners shaking dice and chatting up the crowds walking down avenue G.
Congratulations and thanks go to the tent erection crew who put it up in the pouring rain and coped well with the mud.We are now personal friends of a big green tractor driver who pulled us out of the mud three times from avenue A where we usually work from. !
There we several near misses of wining the £250.00 and we had the pleasure of giving away two large cuddly toys and several little toys to families who all had a go.
Friends Peter, Harriot and Alice Mummery designed a well dressing of a classic car in front of Chatsworth House. This gave Albert an excuse to stagger down with Peter to the Centre Ring to be photographed with original car and its owners.
A test of endurance to smile and chat all day but well worth the effort as we raised £2,371.37. A big thank you to all who helped and took part over the weekend.
